Mission to NIGERIA – February 2026 (25.2.2026)
A six-member team of "Heart Doctors" departed from Athens on Wednesday, 25.2.2026, for Nigeria. With a stopover and overnight stay in Cairo, the mission arrived the next day at noon in Kano, a city in northern Nigeria, capital of Kano State. After a five-hour journey, the team reached Bauchi State where they were received by the Minister of Health - Health Commissioner and they discussed the plan for the next days.
On 27/2 the team of “Heart Doctors” visited the camp of lepers, who have completed their treatment, discussing the problems they face due to the exclusion from their disease. One of the main issues was how they do not accept their children in the common schools and their houses were in a miserable condition and they asked the team to take care of their situation. The governor of the state was informed and promised that these children will attend schools.
Then they visited Bayara Hospital, which is in urgent need of renovation, and finally the Bauchi State University Hospital.
Over the next 5 days, the team traveled by road to the following remote villages, providing medical assistance:
28/2: Nassarawa village
1/3: Bayara village
2/3: Yelwan Dass village
3/3: Barnawa village
4/3: Jitar village
On 3/3, "Heart Doctors" team visited the Governor of Bauchi State, Mr. Bala Mohammed, where they discussed many issues such as the needs of lepers, the renovation of clinics in the areas they visited, as well as the needs - problems that exist in these areas.
The governor was very cordial and happy with the visit of the "Heart Doctors" to his State as well as with the medical service they offered to his citizens. Moreover, he thanked them by giving them a commemorative plaque and inviting them to a formal dinner the next evening.
On 5/3 they departed with an escort of government officers and security to Kano airport, traveling by plane to Cairo where they stayed overnight.
On 6/3 they arrived to Athens.
During the provision of services, the "Heart Doctors" team identified three medical cases that required immediate hospital care, but the patients and their families were unable to pay for the care, and for this reason the team decided to cover their expenses.
